Discover Soda La Palma

Soda La Palma is a charming little spot nestled in the heart of Alajuela Province, just outside of La Fortuna, Costa Rica. This cozy local eatery is the perfect destination for travelers and locals alike who are looking for authentic Costa Rican flavors in a welcoming environment. From the moment you step inside, the warm atmosphere and friendly staff set the tone for a dining experience that feels like home.

One of the most popular dishes at Soda La Palma is their typical Costa Rican "casado." A traditional plate that combines rice, beans, fried plantains, salad, and a choice of protein, such as chicken, beef, or fish, it's a well-rounded meal that gives you a taste of the region's rich culinary culture. The portions are generous, ensuring that you’ll leave fully satisfied after your meal. The fresh ingredients used in every dish are a testament to the quality and care put into each plate.

What makes Soda La Palma stand out is its dedication to offering authentic, homemade flavors. Unlike many tourist-centric restaurants in La Fortuna, this soda (a type of small, casual eatery) has managed to maintain its focus on providing locals with the kind of food they enjoy every day. That commitment to authenticity is evident in every bite, whether you're indulging in a hearty plate of "arroz con pollo" (rice with chicken) or savoring a simple but flavorful "gallo pinto" (rice and beans with a hint of cilantro and onion).

The restaurant's menu is diverse, offering both traditional dishes and some modern twists. For example, their ceviche is a must-try for seafood lovers. Freshly caught fish is marinated in lime and mixed with diced vegetables for a refreshing and tangy appetizer. Paired with a cold glass of freshly made fruit juice, it’s a combination that truly captures the flavors of Costa Rica.

The location of Soda La Palma also adds to its appeal. Situated just a short distance from La Fortuna, it's an ideal spot to take a break after visiting the famous Arenal Volcano or soaking in the nearby hot springs. Whether you're looking for a quick, satisfying lunch or a leisurely dinner, this soda provides a much-needed respite from the usual tourist traps.

In addition to the fantastic food, the prices at Soda La Palma are incredibly affordable, making it a great option for those on a budget. Many of the local patrons visit frequently, a testament to the quality and consistency of the food. Whether you’re enjoying a meal with family, grabbing a bite with friends, or dining solo, you can count on the same level of service and delicious food every time.

Customer reviews of Soda La Palma are overwhelmingly positive, with many people praising the authenticity of the food, the generosity of the portions, and the friendliness of the staff. Visitors often remark that it’s one of the best places to experience true Costa Rican cuisine without the inflated prices of more commercialized restaurants. Whether you’re a first-time visitor to La Fortuna or a returning guest, this hidden gem is a must-try for anyone looking to experience the real flavors of Costa Rica.

One of the key things that sets Soda La Palma apart is its consistent quality. Even though the menu is full of popular dishes, they are made with fresh, high-quality ingredients that truly elevate the meal. The cooks at Soda La Palma take pride in using locally sourced produce and meats, ensuring that every plate is full of flavor and nutrition. You can taste the difference in every bite, and that’s one of the reasons why this restaurant has such a loyal following.

Whether you’re a fan of hearty, traditional dishes or you're in the mood for something lighter, Soda La Palma offers a little bit of everything. From its famous casado to its fresh ceviche, this local eatery proves that the best meals don’t always have to be fancy or expensive. If you're in the La Fortuna area, don’t miss the opportunity to sit down at this delightful soda and enjoy a meal that truly reflects the heart of Costa Rican cuisine.

  • We visited Soda La Palma several times over the past few years for both breakfast and lunch. The food is very good and is mainly authentic Tico style. I highly recommend an empanada for the road if you are on a travel day. You will not be disappointed. They are the best!

  • We stopped here after our Arenal hike. There was a line up mid day, so be prepared to wait. The casados were good but the chifrijo was even better. Please try it! They have amazing spicy pickled onions and carrots in vinegar they offer as a condiment. It's a must try for sure. There is a great ice cream store right next door. A great place to stop after you hike.

  • I don’t know what those other bad reviews were about. I had the fried fish and it was Awesome! EVERYTHING came out hot (too hot to eat for a few minutes). Every table was full; I counted over 30 customers. As Soon as a table got up it was cleared in less than a minute & then promptly wiped down. I had the shorter lady with the lightened hair as my server & she was outstanding; knowledgeable, bilingual (possibly more), patient & observant. As soon as I put my napkin on my plate, she was there to clear it. The only negative thing I can say was the woman’s bathroom didn’t have TP and the soap dispensers near it didn’t work- but there’s another sink by the tables for customers that did have a working soap dispenser. The garden out back was nice & I was Very happy to get to pet the little bull & donkey.

  • I wish we had a place like this where I live. This was hands down the best meal I had in Costa Rica & the most affordable. Portions were huge & just so delicious. Everything freshly made. When in Costa Rica definitely try to stop at a "Soda" establishment. It's where the locals go.

  • Another great family owned restaurant. This place was packed but service was quick (for them). The food again was great. I love the outside seating every where and no rushes you to leave.

  • We noticed this soda from the car because it was full, and it was clearly popular with locals — which is always a very good sign. We decided to stop, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The food was exceptionally tasty, clearly freshly prepared, and the portions were generous. Nothing fancy, just honest, well-made local food done right. Prices were very fair for the quality and quantity you get. The atmosphere felt authentic and relaxed, exactly what you hope for from a local soda. If you want real Costa Rican food where locals actually eat, this place is definitely worth stopping for.

  • So good we went twice during our few days in La Fortuna! It's right near the volcano parks and hot springs, so not a far journey, and it can get packed cause everyone knows it's good. There's a trampoline and small slide for the kids, as well as a donkey and cow and chickens in a stable to look at while you wait for your food. Everything was hot and delicious! Pineapple smoothies are highly recommended, as is the pork belly!
